I'm meant to teach kids, not teens... (11/11/24)
Howdy all!! I hope you're all doing amazing!! This week seemed very slow fast. Slow in the moment, fast in general. We did have some very interesting things happen this week, so let's review!
Week in review:
☆We had a good lesson with Debbie on Monday! She's going to pay Tithing!!! Queen!
☆Tuesday we were supposed to go to a members house for dinner, but we were gonna have a lesson with Kathy. So we texted this member about it, but never heard back... so we didn't go until we got a text from her. We called her and explained our situation and she insisted we come get dinner. So we quickly ran over, got dinner and ran back to the church. Kathy told us she was sick, so her lesson didn't happen. But we did eat dinner quietly while in our Book of Mormon class! It was really funny!
☆We went to the farm for service again!! I love serving there!!! Nothing to crazy happened. Except one of the Tipp City Sisters, Sister Bundy, had to block one of the ponies from eating the other ones food. She did good at it, so yay for her!
☆District council! Always good!
☆Something interesting did happen after district council though. We taught high school. (Don't worry we got permission from President Rasmussen) We got invited to teach about our church and beliefs in a religion class in a local high school. It was an interesting experience. The kids were chill, but the teacher was kinda bashy... oh well. It happens. Also, I'm good at teaching kids. Like elementary school kids, not teens. Also I'm used to teaching adults as a missionary. Again, and interesting experience.
☆Saturday we went to a members house for dinner and that read us their sons' email from his mission this last week. He wrote it in a Book of Mormon style, so it's pretty funny!
☆Church was good! Elder Nettles gave a last minute musical number and everyone loved it! It was really good!
☆We met with Kiryn after church! She's been reading and praying, and she said she's been feeling the spirit!! Yay!
Ok, I'm sorry! I didn't write down any funny quotes this week! But I do promise there were some!
Friends:
☆Debbie is paying Tithing and coming to church! So that's good! We're just trying to meet with her more often!
☆Kathy has been sick so we haven't heard much from her this week....
☆Kiryn we met with after church! She's been reading and praying and feeling the spirit! We even set up to meet with her Friday!
Spiritual thought:
This week I've been thinking about recognition. As humans, we want to be recognized. It's a natural desire we all have. I'll admit, it's a weakness I have. I know for me, I want to be known. I came out with a lot of missionaries that in this mission, have all trained, and/or been in leadership. I haven't. I feel like everyone knows all the other missionaries I came out with, but I'm just kinda here. As I was pondering this ans feeling kinda sad, I remembered Elder David A Bednar's talk last October general conference. He quoted President Howard W Hunter saying: "If all men had been, and were, and ever would be, like unto Moroni, behold, the very powers of hell would have been shaken forever; yea, the devil would never have power over the hearts of the children of men’ (Alma 48:17). “What a compliment to a famous and powerful man. … Two verses later is a statement about Helaman and his brethren, who played a less conspicuous role than Moroni, that reads: “‘Now behold, Helaman and his brethren were no less serviceable unto the people than was Moroni’ (Alma 48:19).” President Hunter continued, “In other words, even though Helaman was not as noticeable or conspicuous as Moroni, he was as serviceable; that is, he was as helpful or useful as Moroni.” President Hunter then counseled all of us to be no less serviceable. He said: “If you feel that much of what you do this year or in the years to come does not make you very famous, take heart. Most of the best people who ever lived weren’t very famous either. Serve and grow, faithfully and quietly.”" (In the path of their Duty, Elder David A. Bednar, October 2023 general conference, Saturday morning session)
The spirit reminded me that I am no less serviceable than anyone else. Now, I'm not asking any of you to email me and tell me what a great work I'm doing or anything like that. I'm not asking for that, or even looking for that. I realized that even though I can't change the world in a huge way like everyone dreams of, I can and (hopefully) have changed the world for one person. The spirit reminded me that I've done my best and been a tool and a help in people's lives. Jacob in Liberty Township, Gwen in Beavercreek, and others in my other areas, including the members. I realized, I didn't need public recognition, my Heavenly Father sees me in my efforts of service, even when no one else does. And that's what he's asked of us. So I hope you remember that you are "no less serviceable " than anyone else. Even if you can't serve in the same way, even if you have 10 kids and 30 minutes, (or seconds) to do something. The Lord called and wants you, and you are no less serviceable.
Sorry that was so long, but I hope it helps someone! That's all for this week! Transfers are on Thursday, so we'll see what goes down! I hope you all have a fantastic week! I'll write again soon!
Love, Sister Alex Hersom!
